How to Read the NFRC Label on a Replacement Window

Every window certified for energy performance in the U.S. carries a label from the National Fenestration Rating Council, an independent nonprofit that rates fenestration products under one uniform procedure. The label is the one piece of paper in a window sale that isn't marketing. Learn to read it and you can compare a $400 window against a $900 window on facts instead of adjectives.

The four numbers that matter

U-factor measures how readily the whole window assembly — glass, frame, and edges together — conducts heat. Lower is better: a lower U-factor means less heat escaping in winter. This is the headline number in most of the country, because heating loss through windows is usually the bigger problem.

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) measures how much of the sun's heat passes through the glass, on a scale from 0 to 1. Lower means less solar heat comes in. In hot climates you generally want it low to cut cooling load; in cold climates some solar gain in winter can work in your favor. The Efficient Windows Collaborative, a consumer program operated under NFRC, has plain-language selection guidance by climate if you want to go deeper than the label.

Visible Transmittance (VT) measures how much daylight gets through, also 0 to 1. Higher means a brighter room. Low-E coatings that block heat also trim some visible light, so two windows with the same SHGC can look noticeably different in daylight.

Air Leakage (AL) measures how much air passes through the assembly under test conditions. Lower is tighter. Not every label carries it, but it's worth asking about, especially on sliding and hung windows, which have more operable joints than casements.

Whole window, not center of glass

One trap to avoid: some sales literature quotes "center-of-glass" performance, which measures only the middle of the glazing and ignores the frame and edge spacers — the weakest parts of the assembly. NFRC ratings are whole-window numbers. When comparing quotes, insist on NFRC whole-window figures for every product on the table. If a salesperson can't produce them, that tells you something.

Where ENERGY STAR fits in

ENERGY STAR is a separate program that sits on top of NFRC ratings. A window earns the ENERGY STAR mark by meeting U-factor and SHGC criteria set by climate zone — the thresholds differ for the Northern, North-Central, South-Central, and Southern zones, because what's efficient in Minnesota is not the same as what's efficient in Puerto Rico or south Texas. The criteria page lists the current thresholds for each zone; check your zone rather than assuming any ENERGY STAR window is the right ENERGY STAR window for your climate.

Using the label in a real purchase

  • Ask for the NFRC ratings in writing for the exact product line and glass package being quoted — ratings vary between glass options within the same product line.
  • Compare U-factor first in heating-dominated climates, SHGC first in cooling-dominated ones.
  • Check the quoted product against the ENERGY STAR criteria for your zone if certification matters to you — for comfort, for resale, or for incentive eligibility.
  • Don't pay a premium for a rating improvement so small it's inside the rounding. Moving a U-factor slightly matters far less than fixing a leaky installation.
